Spanish

Spanish, the third most spoken language globally and second in native speakers, is a vital communication tool for nearly 500 million people worldwide. In the United States, the over 50 million Hispanics represent the fastest-growing social and political demographic in North America. As a result, proficiency in Spanish is increasingly essential for those preparing to enter the global economic landscape and a wide range of professional fields.

At Fisk University, our Spanish program offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the Spanish-speaking world. With a strong focus on literary, linguistic, and theoretical frameworks, students explore the rich diversity of cultures including Indigenous, Afro-descendant, Asian, and other communities across Spain and the Americas. Our Spanish majors and minors graduate with a comprehensive and critical understanding of the language, literatures, and cultures, supported by opportunities for collaborative research with faculty. Additionally, qualified students may pursue an Honors Thesis under the mentorship of our distinguished faculty, deepening their academic and cultural engagement.
