Mathematics and Computer Science
Our classroom instruction and undergraduate research opportunities prepare our students well for their next steps in graduate study or in their professional careers. Our faculty members are committed to providing a sound treatment of mathematics and computer science from lofty abstract ideas to real-life applications. New focus areas in our program, like an emphasis area in Bio Mathematics and Informatics, recognize the changing trends in our society and reflect the need for a global presence of mathematicians and computer scientists in the future.
Chair's Welcome Statement
I am pleased to serve as Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Fisk University. Mathematics and computer science are deeply embedded in all of the quantitative disciplines and serve as a fundamental aspect of the social sciences, as well. I encourage interested applicants or collaborators to contact our faculty directly to learn more about Fisk and our individualized attention to the needs and aspirations of each of our students.

Academic Disciplines
Our disciplines are a part of your transition into higher education which involves being aware that each discipline is a distinct discourse community with specific vocabularies, styles, and modes of communication.
Mathematics
Math and Applied Math majors develop critical skills in problem-solving and analytical thinking. The Math major is a flexible degree that prepares you for an increasing variety of careers where math plays a central role. The Applied Math major prepares students for careers in areas such as mathematical modeling, computing, data science, business management, and consulting. Each major also prepares students for further study in mathematics, statistics, and related disciplines.
Computer Science
Computer Science is problem solving, an essential skill for life. Students study algorithmic processes and the design, development and analysis of software and hardware used to carry out these processes. Since computers are used for a variety of purposes by people in all walks of life, there is a significant human side to computer science as well.
Data Science
Data science is the study of how we extract meaning from data, and in a data-driven world, this is an exciting time to seek a degree in this field. Data science is unique in that it combines techniques and theories from many fields including mathematics, computer science, probability and statistics, machine learning, pattern recognition, communication studies, art, and ethics.
