Admission and Requirements for Program(s)
Admission to Teacher Eduaction
Students seeking admission to any teacher preparation program offered by the University must adhere to the following guidelines:
- Submission of a separate application (obtained from the teacher education office; must be submitted by the end of the first semester of the sophomore year) to the Teacher Education Coordinator (students entering the University as first-time freshmen are not admitted into the Teacher Education program)
- Attain requisite score on the PRAXIS I (Core Academic Skills for Educators test 5712 Reading, 5722 Writing, 5732 Math). These scores are Math 150, Reading 156 and Writing 162 or ACT, or SAT (ACT score of 21 or SAT score of 1020)
- Clear TBI/FBI Security Clearance (criminal background check) and TB Skin Test
- Satisfactory progress towards completion of an academic major chosen from among those acceptable for the elementary or secondary education program selected
- Hold a minimum cumulative Fisk grade point average of 2.5 or better (must have a GPA 2.75 cum to enter Student Teaching and graduate to be recommended for licensure
- Submission of three faculty letters of recommendation
- Completion of a professional essay describing why the prospective student wants to enter the program
- Completion of an Interview with the Professional Education Council.
Students failing to meet any of the requirements above will be unable to enter the Teacher Education Program. Non-licensure candidates can graduate below the 2.75 GPA and will not participate in edTPA and Praxis II (complete student teaching and the education seminar course involving Special Education, K-8 Interventionist or 6-12 Interventionist).
Requirements for all education programs include completion of normal University degree requirements as well as specific education courses:
- Completion of an academic major chosen from among those acceptable for the elementary
or secondary education program selected. Details are specified below.
- Please review the admission requirements. Please seek advisement before taking Praxis I or II
test (due to unforeseen test changes by the Tennessee Department of Education).
- Admission to and completion of student teaching at a level of performance satisfactory to
the Teacher Education program, cooperating schools and mentor student teachers.
- Demonstrate knowledge and instructional strategies to encourage development of critical
thinking, problem solving, and performance skills in individuals in grades K-12.

Students seeking admission to the Special Education, Interventionist K-8 or 612 program offered by the University must adhere to the following guidelines:
- Submission of a separate application (obtained from the teacher education office; must be submitted by the end of the first semester of the sophomore year) to the Teacher Education Coordinator (students entering the University as first-time freshmen are not admitted into the Special Education program)
- Attain requisite score on the PRAXIS I (Core Academic Skills for Educators test 5712 Reading, 5722 Writing, 5732 Math). These scores are Math 150, Reading 156 and Writing 162 or ACT, or SAT (ACT score of 21 or SAT score of 1020)
